Year 2021 – the first half of 2022

In Edita Learning’s business, the reporting period saw both growth and development. During the period, we focused on expanding our range of learning materials, which serves our goal of increasing our market share in the learning materials market.

The most significant achievement of the reporting period for Edita Learning was the publication of the first new preschool and primary education learning materials for the primary school market. Product development and production of primary school materials has been a large and significant project for Edita Learning for several years. A completely new kind of a learning material package that enables flexible preschool and primary education was created for the primary school market as the first in Finland. Differentiation of teaching has also been taken into account in our learning materials in a way that differs from the customary way. The same textbook is suitable for teaching all groups.

During the reporting period, Edita Learning continued to publish learning materials in accordance with the new upper secondary school curriculum (LOPS 2021). Following the curriculum reform, Edita’s range of subjects in upper secondary school increased from 7 to 13. During the reporting period, the publication of new upper secondary school learning materials, scheduled for three academic years, was mostly completed. By expanding the range of study materials in upper secondary school to new subjects, Edita Learning seeks growth in market share and net revenue in the Finnish upper secondary school market. In the fall of 2021, strong digitalization began in the upper secondary school material market as a result of free education. This strong digitalization continued during the reporting period, and at the end of the period, the share of digital learning materials in upper secondary education was about 85 percent. Before upper secondary education was made free, digital materials accounted only half of the market.

In the lower secondary school learning material market as well as in vocational education, Edita Learning offers a wide range of well-known high-quality learning materials. Of these, especially the lower secondary school student guidance material increased its market share during the reporting period. In vocational education, Edita Learning’s materials were particularly successful in the fields of business administration, technology and social and health care.

Edita Learning produces versatile training for the competence development of educational staff. During the reporting period, special attention was paid to the development of online training and the provision of traditional open face-to-face training was discontinued.

Based on the results of the Our voice and Pulse employee surveys conducted during the reporting period, the strengthening and management of the growth culture and the development of a more customer-oriented operating culture were made special development targets for the learning business. The culture of growth was developed by increasing reflection after projects, diversifying work across team boundaries and increasing internal communication and information sharing. Customer orientation was developed by increasing working at the customer interface, for example, with more school visits and by sharing customer information and understanding more widely.
