Year 2021 – the first half of 2022

The past reporting period was very successful for Edita Legal Information.

Edita Legal Information provides legal information online services, books and training for lawyers and other experts who need legal information in their work. The business continued its strong and profitable development also during the reporting period.

Edita Legal Information’s most important online legal information service, Edilex, and its various subject-specific versions, as well as additional content, increased their net revenue as a whole compared to the previous period. Other digital services, such as the public procurement search service Credita, the digital library, labour laws and customer-specific legal information services, also succeeded as expected.

The new editorial board of the Edilex service began its term of office in May 2023. Going forward, the editorial board will play a key role in the development of the publication policy of articles published in Edilex, as well as in maintaining and improving academic quality. The Editorial Board is chaired by the Secretary General of the Finnish Bar Association, Niko Jakobsson, and its composition comprehensively represents the Finnish law faculties.

Edita Legal Information has produced the Ministry of Justice’s free legal information service Finlex since the late 1990s. In spring 2021, the Legal Register Centre launched a tender for a new version of the Finlex service and related additional services.  The final procurement decision and the news that Edita Publishing won the contract were published in September 2022. The development of the service has come a long way with a target for the production release at the end of 2024.

Edita’s legal training services conducted more than 100 open webinar and hybrid trainings on topical legal topics during the reporting period. The general economic situation has led to a decrease in the average number of participants in trainings, which is reflected in a slight decrease in net revenue. In addition to open trainings, Edita’s legal training services have produced on-demand trainings and invested in the development of training concepts that will be implemented in 2024, seeking new target groups.

The net revenue of Edita Legal Information’s books remained at the same level as in the previous reporting period. The share of net revenue from the digital library of total net revenue increased. More titles were published than in the previous period.

For the future growth of the business and new services, Edita Legal Information’s management team actively worked on operating models that enable growth and development during the fall of 2023. The aim is to ensure that the company’s expertise is utilized in the best possible way and to identify which external expertise needs to be acquired from outside by recruiting or through partnerships. Customer orientation is one of the most important business priorities and regular customer and market research has been carried out to develop it.
